Our Story

Icon

Z heng was founded in Oxford with a simple but ambitious vision: to bring the warmth, flavours, and cultural richness of Malaysian cuisine to a historic city known for learning, travel, and international exchange. From the beginning, the restaurant was designed as more than a place to eat. It was meant to be a meeting point of cultures, stories, and traditions.

The name Zheng was chosen as a tribute to Admiral Zheng He, the legendary Chinese navigator of the 15th century. Zheng He’s great voyages across Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean, and beyond helped shape trade, diplomacy, and cultural exchange between China and the Malay world.

Inspired by this spirit of exploration, Zheng Restaurant reflects the historical crossroads of Southeast Asia. Malaysian cuisine itself is the result of centuries of movement and exchange — Chinese stir-frying techniques, Malay spices, Indian curries, and influences from across the region. Zheng’s menu brings these traditions together.

Located in Oxford, a city shaped by centuries of scholars and travellers, Zheng feels naturally at home. Just as Zheng He’s fleets carried food and culture across oceans, we carry the tastes of Malaysia across continents.

"Zheng is not only a restaurant, but a modern reflection of history — a celebration of connection, discovery, and the enduring power of shared food."

The Legend

Admiral Zheng He

The Rise to Power

Fleet Admiral and Diplomat, Zheng He (1371–1433) was one of the most famous explorers in Chinese history. Rising from humble beginnings to serve the Ming Empire, he distinguished himself in warfare and diplomacy.

The Treasure Fleet

In the early 15th Century, Zheng commanded the "Treasure Fleet"—over 300 ships and 28,000 crewmen. These engineering marvels dwarfed European vessels, carrying porcelain, silk, and gold across the ocean.

Seven Voyages

Between 1405 and 1433, Zheng led seven epic voyages reaching Vietnam, Thailand, India, and Africa. He came as an ambassador of peace and trade, bringing back rich culture and culinary influences.
